Things to do at Plitvice Lakes National Park

Plitvice Lakes National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979, is about 120-130 km from Zadar, roughly a 2-hour drive. Sixteen terraced lakes connect by waterfalls and wooden boardwalks across forested karst terrain. Swimming is strictly forbidden throughout the park, whatever the water looks like from the paths.

In summer, entry tickets are timed and should be bought online in advance; the park has two entrances, Entrance 1 and Entrance 2, feeding different sections of the walking routes. Without a car, a day tour from Zadar is the simplest way in, with return transport and a guide handling the timed-entry logistics.

Rastoke, a small watermill village near Slunj just north of the park, makes a worthwhile add-on stop for travellers with more time.
